Importance of Oral Health to Our Pets: Oral health is as important to the overall health and longevity of our pets and other animals, as it is to humans. Animals’ mouths are their hands, arms and “windows to the world”, and may be considered even more essential to their well being than a human’s is to theirs. Animals not only use their mouths to eat, but also to: groom themselves, protect, communicate and carry objects. Their acute sense of smell is also affected by the status of their oral health. Generally speaking, most mammals are blessed with the same microscopic oral anatomy (vascular and nerve supplies) as humans. They have very similar oral disease processes as humans and feel the same levels of discomfort and pain when they encounter abnormalities. Unfortunately for us, animals have evolved to conceal their pain and maladies from predators. For this reason and because the mouth is “out of sight”, most oral disease processes are not evident until complications have developed. As guardians of our pets, it is very important for us to maintain their oral health, an integral part of keeping them healthy and happy. Our approach is to think in terms of; if a human had what this patient is dealing with, would he/she be painful and in need of help?
Goals Along with providing the safest anesthesetic protocols and monitoring, our goal is to provide your pet with the best veterinary dental and oral surgical care available. AD&OS employs a licensed Veterinary Technician with advanced training in anesthesia and dentistry.
